More bowhunters are realizing how much fun turkey hunting with a bow can be. Below are a couple broadheads that can help hunters put a longbeard in the freezer this spring. As the popularity of bowhunting longbeards increases, so does the selection of broadheads designed to harvest them with. Of course many mechanical heads such as Grim Reaper and The Rage also work great.
ARROWDYNAMIC SOLUTIONS GOBBER GUILLOTINE
Arrowdynamic Solutions makers of the Gobbler Guillotine, was one of the first broadhead companies to manufacture a broadhead designed to lop the head off a lovesick longbeard. The Diamond Edition Gobbler Guillotine has four 3-inch blades that create a 3x3 cutting width so even if a hunters’ aim is slightly off, they will still hit the mark. When the razor-sharp blades pile into a turkey’s neck, the bird usually loses its head. The blades on the Diamond Edition have beefed up titanium blades that don’t require sleeves over them like previous models. The blades are reversible so each head can be used multiple times. When one side is worn out, flip the blades over for a new broadhead.
MAGNUS BULLHEAD
Magnus Broadheads offers the Bullhead for hardcore turkey hunters. The Bullhead has three long offset blades that help increase the arrows’ accuracy in flight. The blades on the Bullhead are an impressive .048"-thick stainless steel. It is available in a 100-grain model with a 2-3/4” cutting diameter that can be used to take neck and body shots and a 125-grain model that has an impressive 4” cutting diameter designed for head and neck shots. The 100-grain model is a great option. With a 2-3/4” cutting diameter, there is plenty of wiggle room if the shot isn’t perfect. Hunters can take a body shot if the tom doesn’t present a good head shot.

Archer Range Rangefinder
When heading into the woods, crossbow hunters shouldn't leave without a rangefinder, pull-up rope and tape measure to estimate their big buck's rack after the kill. The Archer Range Rangefinder is all of that wrapped up into one easy-to-use product. The manual range finder accurately judges distances out to fifty yards. It doesn’t require batteries and gives you the horizontal distance like many high-end rangefinders that cost hundreds of dollars. The unit's tape measure doubles as a 33-foot pull up rope. After your bow is attached to the rope, simply climb your tree and the rope automatically unwinds as you climb.
MATHEWS BOW REVIEWS
Mathews is known for making super smooth and lightweight, 2012 is no exception. The new Mathews Helim comes with a variety of features diehard bowhunters will love. This bow weighs in at 3.5 pounds. The Geo Grid Lock Riser, the Dead End String Stop Lite and the Harmonic Stabilizer Lite are lighter than last years’ riser, string stop and harmonic stabilizer which helped reduce the overall weight of the bow without sacrificing strength and durability.
Another great feature found on the Helim is the size. It is only 30 inches axle to axle, which will come in handy regardless if you are hunting in the backcountry needing a compact lightweight bow when you are hiking miles every day or if you are a diehard treestand hunter and need a bow that is easy to manuever in a tight spot. The Helim is powered by the Helim cam which is super fast and efficient: two things every bowhunter needs in a bow. The bow shoots an arrow up to 332 FPS.
Other key features include a 7-inch brace height which is very forgiving, resulting in better accuracy at longer ranges. The Helim is available in draw lengths from 26-30 inches and draw weights of 40-70 pounds including 65 pounds. The Helim is available in Lost Cam or black. A variety of different colored dampers and accessories can be purchased for your bow so you can give it a custom feel.
I love the fact that the bow is super light and short. I enjoy hunting from a pop-up ground blind for turkeys and deer. When hunting from a seated position, an extra short bow really shines.

GIVE YOUR DOG PLENTY OF H20 WHILE HUNTING
When hunting, dogs work hard. In fact, studies show that a dog working in the field retrieving waterfowl, flushing game and running through thick brush can lose twice the amount of water over a short time as a dog that is sitting in the kennel or on the couch. Keeping your dog hydrated in the field is very important. A few years ago, several dogs died on opening day of pheasant season in South Dakota as a result of dehydration and exhaustion.
The good news is preventing a dog from getting dehydrated is simple. Give them water regularly. Bringing a bottle of water and a collapsible dish into the field with you while hunting to give your dog water is a good idea. There are water supplements for dogs that are similar to sports drinks for people. Add the power supplement to his water and he’ll get an extra boost.
One of my biggest problems while hunting with dogs has been misplacing their food bowls when I return to the truck. Hitch Hero has solved that problem. Now when I return to the truck I can put food and water in the Hitch Hero and feed them. I no longer have to worry about
